How Waerebo Village took shape

Waerebo Village sits in a mountain basin in the Manggarai highlands of Flores. It is known for its circle of conical Mbaru Niang clan houses — palm fiber, bamboo, and rattan, built without metal nails — where families still share a communal lodge. Guests who arrive on foot are received at the village gate, sound the bamboo bell, and enter the main drum house for the Waelu welcome blessing led by village elders.

The village is not a Komodo sailing stop. It is a highland community above the rainforest, reached after the drive from Labuan Bajo to Denge, an ojek to Pos 1, and a guided 2.5–3 hour hike. The story of Waerebo is the story of those houses, the blessing, and daily Manggarai life on the slopes — songket weaving, crop drying, and Arabica coffee grown around the basin.

Mbaru Niang clan houses

Conical, multi-level houses of palm fiber, bamboo, and rattan. Overnight stays are in a communal lodge shared with the village.

Waelu welcome blessing

Arrival is marked at the gate and in the drum house: the Waelu ceremony asks hospitality and protection from the elders.

Rainforest approach

There is no road into the basin. The last hours are on foot through mountain forest after Denge and Pos 1.

Highland coffee & meals

Communal Manggarai cooking and Waerebo Arabica brewed from beans grown on the surrounding slopes.

Waerebo Village in general

For visitors, Waerebo is a misty highland stay: conical roofs in the basin, a night in the Mbaru Niang lodge, and morning light over the village. IslandSail.id runs it as a land journey from Labuan Bajo — the 2D 1N trek, or as part of the longer Flores overland — which can sit before or after a Komodo sailing date. The same WhatsApp desk handles both.
